Haitian immigrants in Ohio are being called into immigration offices with a choice of either being immediately deported with only $2,600 or wear ankle monitors before facing a deportation hearing.

Dozens of immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, with Temporary Protected Status were called into ICE offices where they were outfitted with monitoring devices and blocked from traveling outside a 75-mile radius from their homes.

Roughly 15,000 Haitians immigrants live in the Springfield area, many of whom were protected by TPS.

Congress created the TPS program in 1990 to provide temporary immigration protections for people fleeing war, natural disasters and “extraordinary and temporary” conditions in their home countries. Beneficiaries are allowed to apply for renewable work permits and gain protection against deportation.

Federal courts last year blocked the government from ending TPS after judges determined the administration had illegally and arbitrarily revoked protections on baseless, pretextual grounds fueled by “racial animus” and an anti-immigrant agenda, pointing to “derogatory” statements from former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Trump, who baselessly claimed Haitian immigrants were “eating people’s pets” and labeled Haiti a “s*** hole country.”

In overturning this decision, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito argued that “none of the cited statements by either the President or the Secretary was overtly racial, and in substance all expressed policy views that could rest on race-neutral justifications.”

Last week, Homeland Security announced TPS for Haiti is officially “terminated” and alerted employers that work permissions have ended.

Rep. Max Miller faces multiple allegations of abuse from women, including his ex-wife, along with allegations of illegal drug use. The House Ethics Committee has opened an investigation into his behavior.

Miller's ex-wife, Emily Moreno, has accused the congressman of threatening and abusing her and their daughter, Axios' Andrew Pantazi reports.

Moreno has alleged that her daughter's collarbone was fractured while the child was in her father's care.

Miller has denied causing the injury, arguing the bruising resembled marks from a car-seat strap.

During an interview with CNN, he denied using illegal drugs and said reports involving needles were related to testosterone replacement therapy.

Miller has also tried to downplay releasing a nude image of his young daughter as part of his crusade to deny domestic abuse allegations.

"This is being taken very much out of context," Miller said. "There is no genitalia of my daughter that was exposed. And this is once again a very salacious headline."

Miller has said he intends to remain in the race for reelection.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found that working veteran underground coal miners in central Appalachia are suffering from black lung disease at the highest rates in nearly 50 years.

The new research shows that even miners with as few as 15 years underground have higher rates of black lung, rates not seen in nearly 40 years.

NIOSH first recommended tougher limits on silica dust exposure in coal mines in 1974 but nothing was changed until 2024, when the Biden administration established new silica dust regulations for mining. 

The mining industry sued. Federal courts responded to the lawsuits with an indefinite delay in enforcement of tougher exposure limits. The Trump administration announced it too would put enforcement on hold.

The Trump administration is also trying to boost coal mining. In early June, Trump announced close to $700 million in federal spending to sustain coal-burning power plants and to support exports of coal. The Trump administration has also ordered coal plants which were planned to close (to be replaced by wind and solar farms) to remain open.

 Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

Leaving the labor force means that someone is neither working nor looking for work.

The total number of women who have left the labor force since January is now 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January. 

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month, while men’s labor force participation was unchanged. 

The economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.

“This is not a sign of a healthy economy, no matter what the administration continues to insist. Instead, it’s a sign that too many women are being pushed to the sidelines,” said Jasmine Tucker, vice president of research at NWLC. 

Nearly 1 in 4 unemployed women aged 16 and over have been looking for work for 6 months or longer (24.3%), including over 1 in 3 unemployed Asian women aged 16 and over (36.6%) and over 1 in 4 unemployed Latinas aged 16 and over (27.5%). 

The leisure and hospitality sector lost 40,000 jobs in July. Women lost 63,000 jobs, while men gained 23,000 jobs. Women make up 52.3% of the leisure and hospitality workforce.

The Independent reports that the Trump administration is proposing a sprawling shelter facility that can detain up to 3,000 unaccompanied migrant children.

A market research call was held with prospective service providers on Tuesday.

On the call they discussed holding unaccompanied immigrant children inside “emergency influx facility” campuses staffed with physicians, teachers and other “humanitarian care” providers as the administration responds to “surges” at the southern border.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services stressed in a statement to The Independent that “there are currently no immediate plans to establish such a facility.”

A virtual roundtable with industry members “is standard procedure” for market research to articulate the agency’s requirements for its facility, the spokesperson added.

A Republican state lawmaker is facing questions after defending the character of a man convicted of a sex crime against a child.

Rep. Shannon Lundgren sent a letter to the judge last month, before the man’s sentencing.

Lundgren wrote the letter on her official Iowa House of Representatives letterhead, describing David Lehmann as respectful, caring and involved in the community. She said she has known him for years through her family’s restaurant in Peosta.

Lehmann was originally convicted of lascivious acts with a child in 2022 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The Iowa Court of Appeals overturned that conviction in 2024. He had another trial, and in April a jury found him guilty of the same charge. He received a 10-year sentence again, but the judge suspended that sentence, meaning he avoids prison time as long as he abides by five years of probation. He also has to register as a sex offender.

Lundgren said Lehmann’s family asked her to write the letter and that character letters are a standard part of the legal process. She said the letter only spoke to her personal interactions with Lehmann.

The Pentagon on Friday fired the editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes and a top reporter for insubordination after they spoke publicly against any interference by the Defense Department. The newspaper’s publisher, who announced his impending retirement days ago, was also dismissed.

The Stars and Stripes is the military news outlet that has a long history of editorial independence. The newspaper is partly funded by the Pentagon.

Erik Slavin, editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes told The Associated Press he was dismissed for insubordination after an interview he gave that objected to potential censorship by the U.S. military. He received a notice of separation, as did publisher Max Lederer and Middle East reporter Lara Korte, Slavin said.

Across parts of northwest Indiana, thousands have been without power for more than 10 days.

In Gary, Indiana, residents have reported damage and debris still littering the streets. Some are cleaning clothes in sinks, many are under a boil advisory for water, drivers are traveling in complete darkness with streetlights out, and in some communities residents have reported sewage backing up.

In Illinois, outages had been nearly cleared just days after the storms.

But in Indiana, more than 40,000 were still without power as of Friday morning, down from the more than 400,000 reported after the Aug. 11 storms. The largest outages centered in Lake County, Indiana, where Gary is located.

The region is largely powered by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, also known as NIPSCO.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has called on NIPSCO to step up its efforts to turn the lights back on.

NISOURCE Executive VP Melody Birmingham confirmed residents in cities like Gary, Munster and Highland will likely have to wait until Tuesday – two weeks after the storm hit – for power to be restored.

“There are vast differences that are system related. The impact that came through, the trees, the infrastructure, the access - that’s the difference,” Birmingham said.

Birmingham says more than 80% of the 400,000 affected customers have had power restored. She said crews are assessing more than 2,000 miles of power lines, many blocked by uprooted trees. 

NIPSCO has previously come under fire for raising their rates by $257 million, resulting in higher average utility bills.

Content creator and golf brand Good Good created and launched an advertisement for Calloway for a new golf driver which showed a woman being pushed to the ground after reaching for the club.

The ad showed Good Good co-founder Garrett Clark rushing over to Alexis Miestowski - a professional golfer and regular content creator for Good Good - and pushing her to the ground before shouting: "Do not touch my new driver."

The advert drew a backlash and was accused of making light of violence against women.

"We posted a video to our channels that ultimately depicted actions that are not aligned with our values as a brand," read the Good Good apology on X.

"We have since taken that content down, and sincerely apologise.

"Good Good has always stood for making the game of golf more inclusive to all, and we will continue to ensure that is our mission moving forward".

Interesting that they claim the ad was not aligned with their values when their co-founder is the one who pushed the woman to the ground in the ad. No one at Good Good or Callaway also saw any issue with the advertisement until after it was launched and heavily criticized.

It is also interesting that neither Callaway or the PGA sees this ad as a reason to stop working with Good Good. They seem to take the attitude that since the advertisement was taken down, there is no issue.

In a statement issued to various media, Callaway, which has worked with Good Good since 2023, said: "We are disappointed by the content that was posted, and are appreciative of Good Good for addressing this.

"We look forward to working together to ensure a more inclusive space in golf."

Last year the PGA Tour announced plans to stage the inaugural Good Good Championship in Texas, which is currently scheduled to take place in November.

"The PGA Tour believes in golf's ability to bring people together and create a welcoming environment for all," a PGA Tour spokesperson said in reaction to the Good Good advert.

"We do not condone violence in any form, and the since-deleted video does not reflect our values or commitment to inclusivity and respect."

The fact that there were several decisions made along the way to create this advertisement and no one objected or saw anything wrong with it is quite telling in an increasingly misogynistic environment. And again, white males get away with a half-hearted apology and no actual repercussions.

Accenture CEO Julie Sweet has asked employees to not take vacations in August, instead focusing on generating new business and revenue in the final weeks of the company’s financial year. The company has also introduced a one-time change allowing employees to carry forward unused vacation days into the next financial year.

In a memo seen by Bloomberg, Sweet said employees should look for more ways to serve clients and generate additional revenue during the fourth quarter.

“Our shareholders are counting on us to deliver a strong quarter in Q4 — everyone can contribute,” Sweet wrote.

Sweet received a total compensation of $29,641,903 for the 2025 fiscal year, including a base salary: $1,550,000, a cash bonus of $4,500,000, stock awards of $22,876,232 and $715,671 in other compensation.

Keshia Golden pleaded guilty Monday to an amended count of Class 3 involuntary manslaughter in the 2022 stabbing death of her boyfriend, Calvin Sidney. She received two years of probation.

Golden previously faced a first-degree murder charge and her case had originally been set for a bench trial Monday. 

Golden has maintained that she acted in self-defense.

More than 50 domestic violence calls had previously been made from the couple's home. Golden also obtained an order of protection against Sidney in July 2022 after alleging he punched her in the face.

Domestic violence survivor advocates had called on Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke to dismiss the case.

Golden's attorneys issued a statement following the plea.

"The offer from the State’s Attorney’s office clearly shows that prosecutors never believed they could convince a judge or jury that our client, Keshia Golden, was guilty of first-degree murder.

"It is a disgrace that it took almost four years for the prosecution to admit this. Continuing to prosecute Keshia for first-degree murder has caused her and her family unbelievable stress as she was threatened with decades in prison.

"Keshia has made the difficult decision to accept the prosecution’s offer to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and a sentence of probation in this case to ensure that she will be able to raise her daughter and see her grow up. This is a rational decision, but it is not a just outcome.

"Our clients face these difficult and personal decisions every day when choosing between their freedom and pleading to something they are innocent of, but which risks much harsher penalties after trial.”

Prosecutors claimed that Sidney grabbed the eight-month pregnant Golden and pushed her onto a counter before family members separated them. They then claimed that Sidney went into a bedroom where Golden followed him and stabbed him in the leg, striking his femoral artery.

Golden's attorneys said that Sidney repeatedly slammed Golden's head against the countertop before she grabbed the knife and stabbed him in self-defense.

Golden was initially held on a $2 million bond before a judge reduced it to $50,000. Community groups helped post her bond, allowing her to leave jail before giving birth.
